Health and safety for computer users

Introduction

This document provides information about and in support of the Department’s compliance with the law concerning Health and Safety aspects of the use of computers and display screen equipment, specifically the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002. Good keyboard skills play a key role in reducing the likelihood of discomfort or injury. The University Computing Service has information about keyboard training and typing skills.

The Repetitive Strain Injury Association provides a range of information regarding RSI. The University Computing Service also provides information about Work-related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULDs).

Eye and eyesight tests for Employees

Employers are required to provide an eye and eyesight test for employees who are VDU users as soon as is practicable after a request to do so.

If you are an employee of the University and you require an eye and eyesight test, contact the Occupational Health Service on 36594 to make an appointment for an eye and eyesight test. You will be tested by an OHS nurse who will if necessary refer you to the optician that the University uses.
